Boarding Your Pet for the First Time – Age Requirements

First-time pet owners are just like new parents. The job comes with having to adjust to feeding schedules, cleaning up after a spill or accident, and getting used to interrupted sleep. If you’re one-half of a working parent household, it may be time to turn to daycare as your puppy gets older. Like any regular daycare, dog boarding and cat boarding each come with certain age requirements, so if you’re thinking of boarding your pet for the first time, take note of these simple rules.

Minimum Age Requirements for Dogs

For a puppy’s own protection, most kennels’ minimum age requirement is between 12 to 17 weeks (4 months). This is because the majority of younger animals will usually have their first full set of adult shots by 12 weeks and second full set by 16 weeks. Puppies, as opposed to older dogs, are at higher risk of exposure to airborne viruses and have a tougher time fighting them off due to an under-developed immune system. At the Paw Resort and Wellness Centre, we require that your puppy is vaccinated against Bordetella for extra protection. Check out our FAQ section for more information!

Maximum Allowable Age for Dogs

Every dog ages differently and, depending on their breed, may not act their age despite being older. Thus, most doggie daycare establishments won’t place an age restriction on older animals or will allow borders of up to 14 or 15-years-old. Group play environments are sometimes too overwhelming for older dogs and we understand that, so you can rest assured that your senior dog will be properly looked after at The Paw Resort.

Minimum Age Requirements for Cats

The minimum age requirements for cats are identical to those for dogs, as kittens usually complete their first and second sets of vaccinations around the same time.

Maximum Allowable Age for Cats

Most senior cats will be accepted for boarding even if they have underlying health conditions. We have a veterinarian on staff and are qualified to administer medication. Some kennels will require that bloodwork be performed or a veterinarian may be asked to evaluate the animal. If your pet is prescribed medication, the Paw Resort won’t charge you an extra fee for administration. We will, however, ask that you keep the medication in their original containers and provide us with clear instructions to allow us to better care for your pet.

Boarding Your Pet at the Paw Resort and Wellness Centre

We love to give your pet the best experience because they are family too! If you’re keen on boarding your pet with us, you can first come in to take a tour of the facility and meet our talented, caring staff of pet lovers.

Once you’ve scheduled your stay with us, we ask that you provide your pet’s vaccination records and their own meals and treats. This is to ensure that your pet doesn’t have to undergo any drastic changes such as having to get used to a different type of food. Please provide bottled water if you are particular about what your pet drinks and an item with your scent on it to keep them comfortable.

Remember to take ample time to review the information you provide us with—we want to get everything right! We recommend dropping off your pet at 6:00 pm to allow them to settle. If any plans change, please let us know ahead of time!

Conclusion

Daycare can be a great experience for your pet but always keep in mind that their real home is with you. It’s important to adhere to the requirements of your local shelter so that they can provide your pet with maximum comfort and safety.
