Such a great experience with puppy classes. Worth every penny. My puppy had so much fun interacting with the other dogs and getting to have the little play after as a group, and all the fun games and activities we got to do at the end of each class was awesome. Joanne did such a good job with everything she taught and the personalized puppy cookies at the last class were just the best!!! We will definitely be coming back for more classes.

Why Yes, We’re Here to Help

A Training Class is not the place for your dog to learn, a Training Class is a place for people to learn. A good dog Trainer doesn’t train dogs, a good Trainer teaches people how to help their dogs. Your dog will only improve if you do the work in the environments your dog will experience, no dog will improve if you only practice in class.

Go to a good class, ask the Trainer questions, so you are clear on what you need to do. Listen to the Trainer fully, the snippets of information they give are important. Practise in class, so your Trainer can see you have a good understanding on how to help your dog’s learning.

Then go and practise these skills every day in the real world. Your dog learns best in the home, garden, car and streets, beaches and fields, they learn in real life, not just in a classroom.

Focus Forward Training Centre

Focus Forward Training helps people and their dogs enjoy each other to the fullest with caring, common sense dog training.

In showing a commitment to professional certification and to continuing education our trainers as a group as well as independently continue to attend seminars and lectures, we try to be informed with the latest techniques and strategies that will enable us to provide professional and current canine training classes for your puppy or dog.

This is particularly important in an unregulated industry that does not require trainers to seek education or certification before working with dogs and their people.

Every year more scientific research is uncovered, and the old ways of training are diminishing – this is good news for our dogs. They deserve the best we can give them!

Puppy Principles

For puppies up to 6 months old
6 Week Group Lessons
45 Minute Sessions

This class is a combination of things meant to help you get started in the right direction with your new puppy. Teaching you how to socialize your puppy and what that really means. The importance of relationship building and having fun with your dog, while introducing your puppy to the world of humans, other dogs, and animals that you live with. We work with you on common issues such as housetraining, jumping up, mouthing, what to do about those sharp puppy teeth. We begin to teach your puppy important life skills through the use of toys and play for rewards.

Skills such as:

Accepting a friendly stranger and sitting politely for petting
Having good reactions to other dogs
Coming when called
Mastering the settle exercise
Happy Holds – for collar
Accepting touching and grooming
Introduction to loose leash walking

Fun Fundamentals

Dog training is like a bank account in the sense that time invested now will pay dividends in the form of many years of great companionship.
This class focuses on the foundations—teaching your dog how to respond to cues and build the skills needed for everyday life.
We introduce loose leash walking, settle, focus, recalls, wait/stay, and polite greetings (no jumping), while helping your dog learn how to stay calm and responsive around the added distraction of other dogs and people and stuff. Training is done using marker training and food reinforcement to create clear communication and understanding. It’s not just about teaching the skills—it’s about learning how to apply them in real-life situations so your dog can succeed outside of class.

Cost is $300 + tax!

Trick Class

For dogs of any age
6 Week Group Lessons
45 Minute Sessions

Join us for a fun time learning new skills while your dog learns new tricks! Trick dog training appeals to all dogs and is a great bonding experience for you with your dog, allowing him to participate in more areas of your life. Take a chance on trick training, what have you got to lose.

Want to teach your dog to roll over but you are struggling, how to break down complex tricks into small workable pieces. How to shape your dog to target a spot.

We use the DO MORE WITH YOUR DOG trick titles to direct your learning and guide you to become a trick champion before you know it.

Note: A good connection and impulse control are required for this class. Dogs must be friendly with other dogs and people, on and off-leash. Safety and fun will be stressed.

The Connected Dog

This class is about building a dog you can live with—not just a dog that can perform in a training session.

The Connected Dog focuses on the skills that matter most in everyday life: walking past distractions, making thoughtful choices without constant reminders, and staying connected with you when it counts.

You’ll learn how to create clear communication so your dog understands what’s expected, and how to build cooperation so they choose to work with you—not because they have to, but because it makes sense to them.

You’ll learn how to:

Build reliable focus and engagement in real-world environments
Improve loose leash walking and move together as a team
Help your dog make better decisions around distractions
Develop calm, settled behaviour when it matters most
Reduce reliance on constant treats by using purposeful reinforcement

This class is designed to feel practical. We train for real life—movement, distractions, unexpected moments, and the situations where things often fall apart.

Because at the end of the day, success isn’t about managing your dog every second of every day. It’s about giving them the skills, confidence, and understanding to navigate the world alongside you.

4 Week Group Lessons

Not sure if scent work is for you—or your dog? Or maybe you just have a dog who already loves to sniff and you’re looking for something fun to do together.

This class is a great place to start.

We focus on searching for a primary scent (food) to build your dog’s enjoyment of the game. As your dog learns to hunt and find, you’ll learn how to read their body language—those subtle changes that tell you they’ve found the hidden treasure.

At the same time, your dog is learning how to communicate with you—showing you where the reward is and building a shared understanding between you.

It’s simple, fun, and incredibly rewarding for both ends of the leash.

Struggling with over-excited or unsure greetings?

This class teaches the “Go Say Hi 1-2-3” approach—helping dogs stay calm, feel safe, and build better self-control during social interactions.

Reactive Dog Class

Does your dog become overwhelmed by the world around them? Have walks become stressful, frustrating, or exhausting for both of you? This class is designed to help reactive dogs and their handlers build the skills needed to feel calmer, safer, and more successful in everyday life.

This hybrid program combines virtual coaching sessions with carefully structured in-person classes to help dogs learn without the pressure of jumping straight into a busy training environment. You’ll learn how to better understand your dog’s triggers, body language, and emotional responses, while practicing practical relationship-centered training skills at home with video and handout support.

The final weeks are held in person at The PAW in a thoughtfully arranged training space designed to help reactive dogs succeed. Our goal is to improve communication, confidence, and real-world coping skills for both you and your dog — one step at a time.

Caro Rally

For dogs 6 months and older

This class introduces you to the sport of CARO Rally—a fun and engaging way to improve your dog’s focus, listening skills, and leash work.

Designed for beginners, you’ll learn the foundations of the sport while building better communication and teamwork with your dog.

It’s a great place to start if you’ve ever been curious about dog sports. Plus at the end of it we will help you get set up to try your first Virtual Trial.

Just be warned—once you start seeing progress, it can be addictive!

First Aid for Dogs and Cats

This unique workshop is being taught by Dr. Frank Nichols with a career spanning several decades in small animal medicine. The aim of this course is to give owners a guide to first aid for dogs and provide practical instruction for treating minor cuts and ailments. It can also give the pet parent an insight into potentially problematic conditions that need immediate veterinary care and those that can be managed at home.

Private Lessons

Held either in your home, in our training room or outside in our training yard. Helping you feel better about behavioral problems such as dog/human aggression, problematic resource guarding, dominance, anxiety issues and leadership problems.
