Basic Dog Training Commands You Can Teach

One of the best things about having a dog is that you’ll always have a loyal companion. However, as a pet owner, you’re probably aware that living with a new puppy is similar to living with a toddler. They can be a bit messy, rowdy, and extremely playful, often cute and adorable. Still, they can give you a headache at times.

Spending time to teach your puppy to be a good and obedient member of the family should be one of your top priorities as a responsible pet parent. To do this, you can enroll your furry loved ones in a doggie daycare where they will be taught how to interact with other people and learn training commands. Teaching your dog commands will train them to behave properly, especially when you reward them with good deeds.

If you’re thinking of teaching your dog some commands, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we’ve compiled a list of various basic training commands that you can teach your dog. Let’s dive into it!

Before you train your dog

Ensure that your dog is paying close attention to you to understand that you are giving them a command. It can be quite overwhelming to teach your puppy or dog new tricks and commands because their attention span is quite short, and they can get distracted easily.

To help you with this, you can decide on words to consistently use, such as “look” or “watch me.” When your dog responds to you when you use these words, that means they understand that you want their undivided attention, and you should reward them with a treat.

Basic dog commands

            1. Sit

One of the most basic and easiest commands that you can teach your dog is to sit. When you introduce an easy command, you give them a boost of positive energy, and your dog will get even more excited to learn new tricks.

To teach your dog how to sit, hold a treat close to your dog’s nose. As you are holding the treat, lift your hand and treat it until your dog’s head follows. By doing this, you’ll naturally allow his butt to lower to the ground in a sitting position. Once he’s seated, say the word “sit,” acknowledge his good behaviour, and give him a treat.

            2. Down

Another important command that you can teach your dog is “down.” This is incredibly essential because it prevents your dog from getting too excited and jumping on guests and strangers that they may encounter. Besides that, it teaches them not to get too nosy around the dinner table.

To teach your dog, make sure they’ve mastered the “sit” command. Once they do, get them in a sit position and manipulate to do a down position by moving your hand with a treat towards the ground. Much like “sit,” your dog will naturally move to the down position.

            3. Stay and come

Once your dog has mastered sit and down, you can teach him to stay and come towards you.

To teach “stay,” get your dog in a sit or down position, hold your hand with your palm forward, and say “stay” as you move away. When your dog moves, come back and repeat the action until they remain in the same position. This is incredibly helpful, especially when you leave them in a doggie daycare because they may want to follow you out.

Once your dog knows how to stay, you can teach them the come command. To do this, have someone hold your dog in a room while you stand on the other end of the room. Call your dog by enthusiastically saying, “come.” Once they’ve come to you, reward them with a treat and even a belly rub!

Conclusion

The key to mastering any command is repetition, so once you’re on the doggie training train, you need to be consistent about practicing these commands. By constantly putting in the work to help your dog learn these new tricks and enrolling them in doggie daycare, they’ll work hard to behave better at home and outside since they want to make you proud and because they are family too.
